The company we were using to treat our lawn spread it with a chemical that destroyed a lot of the grass. Sod was not required for the entire lawn - only a portion. After checking Angie's list, I found a review for Curb Appeal Landscaping and the member's problem was the same as mine (he only needed sod for a portion of his lawn) His comments about Curb Appeal were that the company gave him a fair price for the partial installation whereas other companies quoted prices that were "out of the ballpark." He also commented that the work was completed to his satisfaction. Based on that review, I called Curb Appeal - along with 3 other companies. Tony (from Curb Appeal) answered the telephone on the first call; with the others I left messages but never heard back. Tony came by my house, gave me a quote, explained what he would do and when he could perform the work. His price was reasonable for the amount of sod/installation required so I gave him the okay to complete the job. We purchased Zoysia and Tony bought the sod at a very competitive price (I compared it to sod being sold by other nurseries). Tony also trimmed a tree in one area that was blocking the sun and did a nice job shaping it. The sod he purchased and installed has done very well and looks beautiful. I mentioned the review on Angie's list to Tony and told him the other property owner commented that Curb Appeal gave him its best price upfront. Tony told me that is always his intent. I am planning to use him next year to add new sod on the remainder of my yard.

Tony installed sod at my house, which is a specialty of his. He prepped the area, added topsoil, installed and rolled the sod and fertilized it. It looks great.

This was a great experience and I am very pleased. I would certainly recommend Tony (in fact, I have already recommended him to some friends). That's the short story.
Here is the long story.
I wanted to sod a limited area of my yard so I called a recommended landscape company and got a quote. It was over $1,800, which struck me as very high. I knew that this estimate was way out of proportion to what my friends have paid in the past. Therefore, I called another recommended landscape company and I got another quote, which came in at $2,400 ( ! ). Now, please understand that we are talking about 1,500 sq ft of sod at the absolute maximum and, in reality, less than that. When you get a $2,400 quote for something like that, the service provider is really saying to you "I don't want to do the job." I was pretty disgusted at this point, so I searched Angie's List and the internet and found a few other possibilities. I liked what I read about "Curb Appeal" (to avoid confusion with other providers that have similar names, Tony Daniel is the guy's name), so I called them.
Tony was very responsive and very on top of things. His pricing, by the pallet, with small extra costs for sod rollers and a few other things like that, if you need them, is very easy to understand. I liked the fact that his numbers had a basis in reality - i.e., they were related to the number of pallets of sod that I needed, unlike these other guys who just seemed to be pulling random numbers out of the air. He isn't a big company, so I had to call the sod grower and pay for the materials directly, but that wasn't a problem - they took a credit card over the phone and everything showed up exactly on time.
Tony showed up the day before to do the prep work and on the day of the work he showed up on time (actually, he was early) and worked throughout the day in drizzle. He followed all of my instructions, interacted with my sprinkler guy and just generally did a great job. And my total cost was less than half of the highest quote that I had gotten, and almost 40% less than the first quote I had gotten. Bottom line is that he was exactly what I was looking for - a guy who knows how to install sod and who isn't looking to rip you off in the process.

6/8/2011We have had grass growing issue in our front lawn due to the heavy shade and the kids playing on the lawn. In late fall this lawn service cultivated and seeded our yard with fescue and amazingly after a heavy snow fall all the grass started growing like crazy. Now in the heat of the summer the fescue has gone dormant and decided we want to go with a warm weather grass going into the heat of the summer. They gave us an understandable cost/benefit analysis of seeding vs sodding. At first we chose seeding since it was so much less but we did not have the patients to wait for the seeds to grow in the muddy front lawn so we had them put sod rod of zoysia. A little more expensive but we have an instant lawn of emerald zoysia.
The pros: perfect looking sod, probably not the cheapest but reasonable pricing for sod installation service but the quality work makes up for it- they come by and fertilized it on a monthly basis.
The cons: two week lead time on delivery and we grew a little impatient looking at the muddy yard run off after a heavy rain.
You can hire these landscapers with confidence knowing that your investment will be a success. So happy to have a nicer lawn in the neighborhood here in Morningside.

6/9/2011I have several rental properties through out the Atlanta area, Vinnings and Buckhead. It can be tough being a property manager when living out of town. Well Curb Appeal solves a lot of problem associated with integrity and doing the work right when I am not there to micromanage. For example, they take before and after pictures, and work in progress pic, to present the evidence that the work is completed. They scan and email copies of the receipts of material expenses that are needed to do the job. Finally, they accept Paypal which save the time of writing and mailing a check. Would highly recommend this business for an out of town landlord. - John P.

5/20/2011We called this service to follow a landscape drawing of how we wanted the new grass to be edged, with wavy beds that outline our beds. On the mosts part the edging part was quite accurate to the drawing. It is on a steep hill so we had to use bricks and stakes to keep the grass in place from sliding down hill. After a few week the roots were established and kept it secure to the ground. Nice job of beautifying our yard in Ansley Park.
